The story of the World Malayalee Council begins with a recognition of a unique truth: the Malayalee community (people of Kerala origin) has travelled far and wide, built lives in many nations, yet often lacked a unifying global platform. In response to this, WMC was founded on 3 July 1995 in New Jersey, USA — during the first ever World Convention of Non-Resident Malayalees.
At its inception, WMC declared itself a non-political, non-sectarian community organisation, committed to enabling fellowship, cultural connection, social support and professional networking among Malayalees across borders.
Its early objectives laid the foundation: unite the widely-scattered diaspora of Kerala origin; strengthen their shared culture, tradition and way of life; and deliberately build bridges between the homeland and the diaspora.
